The National Security Agency has tapped directly into communications links used by Google and Yahoo to move huge amounts of email and other user information among overseas data centers, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday.

The report, based on secret NSA documents leaked by former contractor Edward Snowden, appears to show the agency has used weak restrictions on its overseas activities to exploit major U.S. companies' data to a far greater extent than realized.

The USS Zumwalt, a massive 610-foot modern-day destroyer with an advanced rocket system, launched into the water off a Maine dock on Monday, in a surprisingly quiet ceremony, given the vessel’s record-breaking size and unusual shape.

It’s the largest destroyer ever built for the U.S. Navy, and it’s notable for its angular profile, The Daily Mail reported.

“It’s absolutely massive,” said Amy Lent, the executive director of the Maine Maritime Museum, in The Daily Mail. “It’s...

Giant mirrors bring winter sun to Norwegian village for the first time in its history

Residents of a remote village nestled in a steeply sided valley in southern Norway are enjoying winter sunlight for the first time ever thanks to giant mirrors.

The tall mountains that surround the village of Rjukan are high enough to deprive its 3,500 inhabitants of direct sunlight for six months a year.

That was before a century-old idea was brought to life: to install mirrors on a 400-metre (437-yard) high peak to deflect sun rays towards the central square.

Happy Halloween: Candy-Crushing Cronyism

This Halloween, millions of Americans will, as every year, be handing out candy. But this year, the real trick could be finding treats made in the U.S.A. Because of government cronyism aimed at protecting big sugar producers, much of the candy in your child’s bag will come from overseas.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in 2012, the price of raw sugar was 40 percent higher in the United States than in the rest of the world. And, while an international sugar glut is expe...

Is Google preparing for a disaster?

There are two mysterious structures built on barges, one in San Francisco Bay, the other in Maine’s Portland Harbor. We know Google is behind both of them, but the company has been silent on details. Most believe the barges will host data centers on water — which the company has a patent for — or serve as floating stores for Google products.

Are there advantages of building on the water?

Google explains this in its patent application for a water-based data center, which was granted ...

Govt. to suspend food stamp (SNAP) program

At the very least it will come to this.  A total suspension of the program is very possible.

The 2009 Recovery Act’s temporary boost to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits is scheduled to end on November 1, 2013, resulting in a benefit cut for every SNAP household.  For families of three, the cut will be $29 a month — a total of $319 for November 2013 through September 2014, the remaining months of fiscal year 2014.[2]   That’s a serious loss, especially in li...

Obamacare’s Website Is Crashing Because It Doesn’t Want You To Know How Costly Its Plans Are

Government shutdown or not, there’s no reason to keep elderly veterans away from the World War II Memorial, says Rep. Louis Gohmer (R-Texas), who was there on Tuesday when a group of 85- to 98-year-olds veterans entered the barricaded Memorial grounds.

“It is a granite sidewalk — it’s a sidewalk!” Gohmert told Fox News on Wednesday.”They (the National Park Service) spent extra money to go find barriers to put up in front of these World War II vets. And I’m wondering what ar...

Shutdown? Not worried about it.

Posted by Bryan Treadway on Thursday, October 3, 2013, In : US News

After learning more about the “government shutdown” I am honestly not that worried. It will only shut down “nonessential” areas of government. Meaning, it's only shutting down the areas of government that are identified as “nonessential” as in, not needed!

Interesting, we are 17 trillion dollars in debt, and we are funding “nonessential” parts of government? Why?

Hey, aside from closing down funding to national parks you know what else closes? The auditing section of the ...

[ And the pricks shut down the 'Panda Cam' ]

These guys have the right idea.

WASHINGTON — They battled Hitler and Hirohito, and on Tuesday they had to fight their way into the World War II Memorial.

As the federal government ground to a halt, creating havoc and hardship from the Beltway to Battery Park and beyond, 91 grizzled veterans from Mississippi did something that eluded the politicians — they got something done in Washington.

Walking on canes and sitting in wheelchairs and helped...

Parliamentarians in Iran have passed a bill to protect the rights of children which includes a clause that allows a man to marry his adopted daughter and while she is as young as 13 years.

Activists have expressed alarm that the bill, approved by parliament on Sunday, opens the door for the caretaker of a family to marry his or her adopted child if a court rules it is in the interests of the individual child.

Iran's Guardian Council, a body of clerics and jurists which vets all parliament...

Dems Attempt Power Grab That Could Kill Keystone Pipeline

Posted by Bryan Treadway on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, In : US News

With all eyes trained on the fight over government spending and Obamacare, the House is scheduled to take up a non-controversial land-swap bill that would trade 2000 acres of  federal land in Arizona for 5000 acres of pristine land owned by Resolution Copper mine.  The bill has bipartisan support and should it be enacted, it is estimated that nearly 4,000 jobs will be created in the area.  Radical environmentalists of course oppose this swap and have joined with local tribes to offer an...

The poster boys of climate change thrive in the icy Arctic: Polar bears defy concerns about their extinction

Posted by Bryan Treadway on Tuesday, October 1, 2013, In : Wierd Science News

For years polar bears have been the poster boys of global warming – routinely reported to be  threatened with extinction due to melting ice-packs and rising sea temperatures.

Indeed, when they were put on the US Endangered Species list in 2008, they were the first to be registered solely because of the perceived threat of global warming.

One prominent scientist said their numbers would be reduced by 70 per cent by 2050 while global  warming proponents – including Al Gore and Sir David...

Artist Shepard Fairey designed the iconic “Hope” poster with the intention of making Barack Obama a nationalized man — now he is having second thoughts on his word choice.

While leaving a high-end Hollywood restaurant, a reporter asked Fairey:

“Given Obama’s track record now, would you put a different word besides “Hope” at the bottom of the image?”

The laughing response:

“A yeah, I’d put a few different ones.”

But none he was willing to tell the cameraman, as...

The Hollywood humor site “Funny or Die” is rolling out an extended campaign to encourage young people to enroll in Obamacare exchanges beginning on Monday, joining a slew of celebrities doing their best to convince the demographic upon which the program depends to ignore their economic interests and shoulder the cost of older Americans’ health care.

The studio’s first video, seemingly meant to remind the “young invincible” demographic of 18 to 35-year olds that freak accident...

Americans are more conservative than they have been in decades

Posted by Bryan Treadway on Tuesday, October 1, 2013, In : US News

James Stimson knows as much about public opinion as anyone in America. He has been tracking the nation’s policy preferences for more than 20 years using a “policy mood” index derived from responses to a wide variety of opinion surveys involving hundreds of specific policy questions on topics ranging from taxes and spending to environmental regulation to gun control.

The latest update of Stimson’s policy mood series suggests that the American public in 2012 was more conservative t...
